A while back I was having some OCD issues and decided that lumping the photography work I do under my SupaFly.Designs business didn't make sense since design and photography are two completely separate passions of mine. So, naturally, I created a new little brand for my photography: deuce.deuce photography and from here on out, any image that was taken by me will be filed under the category "deuce.deuce." And in case you're wondering, twenty-two is my favorite number and for as long as I can remember I've always hollered "DEUCE DEUCE" when I see it.

As I've been working on updating the blog, one of the main things I've wanted to do is re-work the layout so that I can post larger images. I mean, I'm such a visual person that it only makes sense to have big, beautiful images and photographs.

I thought this would be simple enough, but Blogger is causing me a bit of a headache... It appears that Blogger's "large" image default size is 400px, which was fine for my old layout, but now that I'm working with a larger space I'd like the image to auto-fit the now 575px column. I've searched and searched and it looks like the only solution is to upload my correctly-sized images to an outside source (like Flickr or Photobucket), which wouldn't be a problem if it didn't require a handful more steps... If anyone knows a work-around to force Blogger not to scale my 575px images down to 400px, please let me know. In the meantime, enjoy a photo I shot a few weeks ago on my walk home for work -- and my apologies to those of you who got bombarded with updates while I was going through my trial and error process earlier.

I can pinpoint a few reasons for the drout: 1) Blogging started to feel like a chore and I lost sight of who I was even blogging for. 2) Training for my first half marathon was taking up tons of time. 3) I GOT ENGAGED!!! OK, so that isn't really a reason I haven't blogged, but it is a big deal that I never posted about.

Getting a card in the mail to acknowledge birthdays, holidays, momentous occasions, etc. is a major challenge for me, which is fairly embarrassing considering my love for stationery. Fortunately I stumbled across [+] TrolleyCards.com.

TrolleyCards is a fabulous service that helps you get the perfect card in the mail without ever having to sift through the damaged envelopes at Target or the overwhelming awesomeness of the display at Paper Source. You can choose from seriously well designed cards, write your own personal message, and then TrolleyCards assembles the whole thing, puts your return address on the envelope and gets your card out in a timely fashion.

My only beef is that your personal message ends up being typeset in a cheesy handwritten typeface that really should never be used in any design. It'd be awesome if you could write your message and scan it in so that your actual penmanship can be printed. Aside from that, this is a great service.

This baby caught my eye as I was checking out some of the Veer.com staffers picks for best 2009 typefaces. I'm particularly smitten with the "N" -- it's divine.

Warm and inviting — De Soto is a titling face sure to ad a touch of grace to many projects. Its name and inspiration come from a few letters in a 1958 DeSoto magazine advertisement. Many automobile ads back then used wide faces to create a feeling of luxury and elegance. DeSoto gives you that same feeling, but in a more contemporary fashion.

I think one of the reasons I was so bad about blogging toward the end of last year was because I'd been growing tired of the overall appearance around here. Since then I've been itching to do some renovations but hadn't felt inspired until today.

I stumbled across the cards shown above when browsing through the shop over at [+] Old School Stationers. These cards are adorable and I was immediately inspired by the color palette, so I jumped on that inspiration. Don't get me wrong, light blue and red are still big time faves, but I couldn't resist the beautiful orange, gray, brown, mint and yellow combo.

My Weight Loss Success: Part One

Since the post about my weight loss, I've gotten a number of wonderfully unexpected compliments as well as inquiries about how I did it, which I'm happy to share. However, before I say anything, I have to toss out a little disclaimer: I am not a certified personal trainer, nutritionist, or dietitian -- as a matter of fact, the only thing I even come close to being certifiable in is bull shitting. My point here is that what worked for me may not work for you, and you should always consult your doctor about things like this before diving in. Having gotten that out of the way, here we go!

BODY BACKGROUND
In terms of my body shape and size, I've always considered myself to be "average/athletic," leaning more toward the average side as I graduated college. I've never been the skinniest person in the room nor have I ever been the heaviest. I'm right around the 5'-3" mark with solid legs and a broader build versus a long and lean physique. I think it's important to point this out because your body's history can directly affect your ability to get into a healthy place. People who are naturally thin probably have an easier time getting back into shape when they put on pounds.

FINAL STRAW
According to my driver's license, I've been 150 pounds for about eight years, which I could only have wished were true for the past five or six. I knew I was packing on weight, but in my head I was only "a little out of shape." I started avoiding photos because that was the only real way I could see how unhealthy I'd let myself become.

The final straw for me was New Year's Eve of 08/09; I saw photos from the night and was miserable. I don't exactly remember feeling any worse about myself from that night than I had any time before, but I knew my best friend's wedding was coming up in May and I didn't want to see my New-Year's-Eve-self in her wedding photos.

GET-IN-SHAPE HABITS
Any time I'd had it with my body in the past, I'd go out and buy a work out DVD, fitness magazines, a cute new gym outfit, have a salad for lunch, load up my fridge with fruits and veggies, grab a healthy cookbook, and scour the web researching various diets. I would sit and read through the fitness magazines and diet plans and find myself getting angry with what I was reading. I mean, a "snack of five almonds" -- pardon my language, but ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME!?!? I would start to feel completely overwhelmed by all that I was trying to do and my anger would evolve into depression, which would send me straight to a bag of chips and the couch.

THE LIGHT BULB MOMENT
I'm not really sure how or why, but on January 1, 2009, as I angrily ate my salad and planned my trip to Target to buy fitness goodies, a light bulb went off that changed my outlook on what I needed to do to get healthy.

So, here it is, the idea that got me started, the one thing I think you should take away from this post and the working title of my as yet unpublished book: Don't bite off more than you can chew -- a figurative approach to weight loss.

Long time no post! A busy schedule kept me away from the blog, but hopefully I'll be able to get a few posts in this week. Still contemplating a switch-a-roo and just posting whatever, whenever so that I don't feel tied to something and am only posting the best stuff as I find it rather than posting something because I have to. We'll see how that goes...

For now, enjoy this week's mosaic, and if anyone can educate me on how to pick a fresh persimmon and how to eat it, that'd be great! I bought one this weekend that was brightly colored and firm like a not-quite-ripe tomato, but I saw an entire batch of them that looked rotten to me because they were squishy and the produce guy told me that's when they're best... Hmmm... Not sure I can bring myself to eat a squishy, rotten looking fruit when everything I've seen tells me they should be firm. Help?

A friend introduced me to [+] CanvasPop.com the other day and it was like a blessing from heaven... I've been looking for a place to print my photos and digital artwork on canvas for ages, and while I've found a handful of places, this one really stands out. The options and prices available at Canvas Pop are great, and the site is super easy to navigate. The coolest part? You can make a quality canvas print of a photo taken on your iPhone. OK, so I don't have an iPhone, but I think it's awesome that you can get a nice print from a dinky cell-phone camera. I've been bogged down again lately and haven't had the time to post regularly, which bums me out. I really love doing my daily posts; although, I stress myself out over trying to commit to each daily category... When an unpaid hobby bums and stresses me out something is wrong. I might re-think the daily obligation and just go back to posting about something as it comes to me.

In the meantime, check out what I've been busy with at my office:

These were a couple ideas I had for our agency holiday gift. We're giving out reusable shopping bags because of the company's focus on retail performance. I had a couple other concepts that I was working on, but these are my favorite designs.

The first two center around the idea that people probably use their reusable shopping bags for more than just shopping. This series of bags would all fall in the same color scheme, but would have different types of locations where each bag might be used or a descriptive word about the bag's possible contents. A third bag in this category read, "etcetera," for example.

The last bag is semi-branded... One of the things I kept hearing people say is that they're tired of being bombarded with logos and messaging on their bags -- but let's be honest, companies want to advertise. So, I thought a little subtle company-related messaging might be cool. My agency's slogan is "Make Waves," which lent itself to me creating a wicked cute little whale icon. I thought it would be a long shot, but it went over really well. SWEET!

Captain Weird's 39th Stone...

My dad has been producing and passing kidney stones since just before I was born. He usually handles them like a pro. I mean, when you've passed 30+ stones, you pretty much get used to what an "average man" might consider excruciating pain. So, you can imagine how my stomach dropped when he called me Thursday night requesting a ride to the ER.

After a second trip to the ER Friday night and being held captive in the hospital over the weekend to manage his pain (hooray for morphine!), dad had his scheduled lithotripsy this morning. The 9mm stone, which is a little larger than a pea and about 7mm larger than his "usual" stones, stuck in his ureter was blasted and he's officially pain free. Now, hopefully the 7mm stone that's still floating around inside his kidney will wait a while to rear its ugly head...

P.S. For anyone who hasn't had experience with them, passing a kidney stone is said to be the male equivalent to childbirth. We joked that he was in so much pain from this particular stone that it was like he was giving birth to tiplets who were all coming out at the same time standing on each others' shoulders. Yeah -- it was that bad.

Round two in the ER wasn't so bad once the drugs kicked in.

Dad's hospital room was seriously nicer than a few hotel rooms I've stayed in -- and about a billion times cleaner...

Dad really wanted a photo of him wearing a hair net considering he's practically bald.

FREEDOM!!! I'd like to point out that the four windows underneath "Memorial Ho" are the windows to the room he stayed in.

I may be stretching myself a wee bit too thin this week... I feel overwhelming busy at the office, with freelance work, and my social calendar seems to be packed, which is why I'm behind on the posting again.

I'm taking a super quick break to post this great photO. My buddy [+] Ralston had a birthday today, so I made him a little doodle-art. Seeing as how he's a huge advocate for writing letters, having beautiful penmanship and handmade goods, this has to be the perfect gift ever -- hands down. I got bogged down at the end of the week; somehow that carried on through the weekend and into this evening. It's 1am on Monday night / Tuesday morning and I'm trying to decide if it would be safe to go out and get in a run right now or if I should just hop in the shower so that I can sleep in a little this morning... The shower's probably the best bet of those options, but I suddenly my bed seems very cozy and inviting.

Hopefully I'll get back on the posting wagon tomorrow. For now, all I could muster was a color palette that recently came to my attention. I tried to do a little mosaic, but just didn't have it in me. For those of you who make collages and mosaics based on color palettes, I'm curious to know your process. Do you find images first and then build the color palette from there, or do you decide on the palette and try to find images to compliment it? OH-EM-GEE -- I adore this typeface! It's been a little while since I've lost it like this, but this typeface has done me in for sure. If what you see above appeals to you at all, you simply must read more about it and check out the user PDF. From what I've read, the gist is that this is a super-smart typeface with "built-in features, to make your text look like it was painted by hand."
